Baal, Bertolt Brecht, is the founder of Epic Theatre. Classical techniques are abandoned. A grotesque acting style and plastic use - mask, make-up, etc.—come to the fore, and the plot is consistent; a logical flow is not followed. Brecht's first play, BAAL (1918), was written during this period. Baal is a young and talented poet, but he is careless and rude. His intelligence and sexual morality only bring him death. It is a praise of instincts and anarchic sexuality.
Faust is a work that Goethe completed by writing almost all of his life. He finished the play he started at the age of eighteen, Urfaust, shortly before he died at the age of eighty-three. The subject of Faust is taken from an ancient story. The theme of a man making a bet with the devil has been the subject of many stories and plays in previous centuries.
Woyzeck is a play that Georg Büchner is estimated to have started writing in 1836 and was left unfinished after his death. The play is about the dehumanizing effects of the army and doctors on a young man. Often treated as a working-class or working-class tragedy, Woyzeck is also about "the envy of human nature.
